Code of Ethics
The purpose of this document is to provide a framework within which Reiki practitioners and teachers operate. It should be read in conjunction with the Rules of Practice and the Constitution of Reiki NZ Incorporated.
Practise and competency
- Reiki Practitioners and teachers shall practise their profession with integrity, honesty and dignity working to the best of their ability and within their scope of competence for the highest benefit of their clients and students.
- If a Reiki Practitioner or teacher is unwell or fatigued they will take a break from practise or teaching until they have recovered.
- Reiki Practitioners and teachers will endeavour to maintain and increase their skills by ongoing education, self-Reiki and treatment by other Reiki Practitioners.
- Reiki Practitioner and teachers should take into account limitations to their competence and make referrals to other professionals when appropriate.
Care and skill
- Reiki practitioners and teachers shall acknowledge a professional obligation to their clients and students and respect their right to be treated with care and skill so that they receive services which reflect their individual needs.
- Reiki Practitioners and teachers shall respect the culture, values, beliefs and diversity of their clients and students.
- Reiki Practitioners and teachers will avoid doing harm in their work and will seek to increase the range of opportunities available to clients and students.
- The welfare and safety of clients and students is of the utmost importance. A Reiki practitioner can never ask a client or student to undress. Children, young people and vulnerable adults should be accompanied by a parent, guardian, caregiver or chaperone.
- Reiki Practitioners and teachers shall not give guarantees regarding the results of treatment or training.
- Reiki Practitioners and teachers shall not exploit or misuse their professional relationships with clients and students sexually, romantically or otherwise.
Expectations
- Reiki Practitioners and teachers should give a description to clients and students before a session or training as to what they might expect to experience in clear, plain language and outline the cost of the services.
Confidentiality
- The confidentiality of the client is essential. Information and impressions acquired during a consultation, in the course of professional treatment or during teaching, shall not be divulged to anyone without the client or student’s consent except where required by law, or where failure to take action would constitute a menace or danger to the client, student or another member of the community.
Relationships with other professionals
- Reiki practitioners and teachers will treat Reiki colleagues, Natural Health Practitioners and medical professionals with respect. If they have reason to complain then they should make an official complaint to the appropriate Association.
- Reiki Practitioners shall respect the lineage, degrees and method of fellow Reiki Practitioners.
- Reiki Practitioners having clients referred to them by another Practitioner shall return such clients to the original Practitioner when the specified treatment is completed.
- A Reiki Practitioner shall not knowingly interfere with any ongoing treatment instigated by another Reiki Practitioner, Health Professional or Medical Practitioner whilst the client is under that Practitioner’s care.
- If a Reiki practitioner or teacher thinks that a client or student requires professional medical attention, then they should recommend that they consult a medical care provider.
Premises
- The premises of Reiki Practitioners and teachers shall be maintained in a safe, comfortable and hygienic condition at all times.
- Reiki Practitioners and teachers shall display their Reiki Certificates, Membership of Reiki NZ Inc and this Code of Ethics/Rules of Practice in their premises.

Rules of Practice
The purpose of this document is to provide a framework for the professional behaviour of Reiki Practitioners and teachers. It should be read in conjunction with the Code of Ethics and the Constitution of Reiki NZ Incorporated as well as other guidelines issued by Reiki NZ Inc. for example teaching standards, for work with children and online training.
Action
- Where it is necessary to take action for a breach of the Code of Ethics, the Reiki Practitioner may consult with the Reiki NZ Inc. Board.
- In the event of action needing to be taken under the Code of Ethics due to legal requirements or otherwise, and where the Reiki Practitioner does not require the advice of the Reiki NZ Inc. Board, brief circumstances of the action should be noted and forwarded to the Secretary of Reiki NZ Inc. without divulging the client’s details.
- All disputes, disagreements and conflicts will be handled in accordance with the Constitution.
Record keeping
- Complete client records of transactions must be kept, including specific details of treatment sessions, so that if any question of malpractice should arise, Reiki NZ Inc. may be in a position to adjudicate.
- The Reiki Practitioner/teacher shall have a satisfactory standard of privacy for client and student records whether manual or electronic including when records are destroyed and computers are replaced.
Privacy
- All Reiki treatments shall be conducted in a safe, private space.
- Reiki Practitioners and teachers will protect the identity of clients and students and ensure that case studies, articles and teaching materials are anonymous.
Type of treatment
- It is the Practitioner’s responsibility to ascertain from each client any preference the client may have regarding the Reiki session, and to inform the client if they are unwilling or unable to offer the specific treatment.
Interruption of services
- Reiki Practitioners and teachers will make reasonable suggestions, plans or referrals in the event that client or student services are interrupted due to ill-health, personal circumstances or ceasing practice/teaching.
Laws
- Practitioners must comply with the current laws relating to the practice of Natural Health Therapies in New Zealand as well as other applicable laws regarding privacy, health and safety, safeguarding etc. Reiki Practitioners and teachers shall ascertain and abide by local By-Laws.
Promotion
- A Reiki Practitioner or teacher shall not use the registration of Reiki NZ Inc. for the promotion or enhancement of any product, remedy or commercial enterprise.
- A Reiki Practitioner or teacher may use the ‘Member of Reiki NZ Inc.’ logo on their website and materials provided they are a current financial member of the organization. If they cease to be a member, the logo must be removed. A Reiki Practitioner or teacher may not order, create or produce any goods or materials bearing the name of Reiki NZ Inc. in any other circumstance.
- Advertising shall be discreet and presented in a professional manner. Clearly unsuitable advertising, when brought to the attention of Reiki NZ Inc. will be withdrawn.
- Any news release by a Reiki Practitioner or teacher that mentions Reiki NZ Inc. shall be cleared by the Secretary of Reiki NZ Inc. before publication.
